Healthy Lawn Tips
Cutting, watering and fertilizing are the keys to a green lawn. But knowing the details, like the best time to water, when you should mow, and how often to fertilize, makes all the difference. These tips will help make lawn care faster and more efficient.
Mowing Tips:
- Make sure grass is dry so the blades stand upright and are less likely to clump.
- Try not to mow when it’s too hot outside, which puts added stress on your lawn.
- Remember longer grass blades allow the roots to grow deeper, which helps your lawn withstand drought and deters pests and diseases. Keep grass blades around 2 to 3 inches high, to avoid yellow-brown, worn out and dry look to your lawn.
Watering Tips:
- First, determine if your lawn is getting enough water. Brownish-green grass, curled blades and lasting footprints are signs your lawn is too dry.
- Deep watering is the best way to get a healthy lawn, because the blades can grow deeper roots. Try watering your lawn 3-days a week for longer periods of time versus every day for only a few minutes at a time.
Fertilizing Tips:
- The best time of year to begin fertilizing is the start of spring, between the end of March and mid-April.
- Apply the second treatment four weeks later. From there, fertilization should take place every six to eight weeks as needed through October.
- Use slow-release fertilizers that slowly break down nutrients, and save yourself the hassle of frequent reapplications.
