How to Safely Operate Your Snow Thrower
Before you head out to clear a path, keep these snow thrower safety tips in mind for safe, efficient snow removal.
Before Using Your Snow Thrower
- Gear up. Always wear warm, heavy-duty clothes, eye and ear protection, gloves
and closed-toe shoes.
- Check and adjust your skid shoes and that your auger housing is set to the right
height for the surface you’re clearing.
- Map out your route so you have a clear line of attack.
- Clear obstacles and debris from your path. You don’t want to run over any doormats, dog chains, garden hoses or anything else that could damage your snow thrower. Also be sure to avoid any large rocks, tall curbs or even large ice chunks.
Proper Operating Technique
- Never direct snow toward people, pets or personal property.
- Keep clear of the auger housing whenever the engine is running.
- When you’re ready to begin, engage the auger by squeezing the left control lever.
- Squeeze the drive control lever to engage the wheel drive.
- Walk slowly, steadily, and navigate carefully.
- Release the drive control when changing speeds to prevent premature wear
and tear.
- Release the auger control lever to stop.
Adjusting the Snow Thrower Chute
- Rotate the chute control to the right or left to direct the snow where you want.
- If it’s windy, you may need to adjust the pitch angle of the chute.
- First, turn off the engine and remove the safety key.
- Then, loosen the wing knob and pivot the chute up or down.
- When you’re finished adjusting the angle, tighten the wing knob.
