How to Maintain and Store Your Hedge Trimmer
If you want to keep your electric hedge trimmer in good working condition (and why wouldn’t you?), here are a few simple tips.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before inspecting, maintaining, cleaning, storing, transporting or replacing any parts, make sure:
• Throttle control is disengaged.
• All moving parts have stopped.
• Disconnect unit from power source.
• The hedge trimmer is completely cool to the touch.
Lubricate the Hedge Trimmer Blade
When you’re not using your hedge trimmer, store it indoors. And to help prevent unauthorized use—like children or that one neighbor who borrows everything—keep it locked up, on a top shelf, or just someplace out-of-sight.
To apply lubricant:
- Make sure the trimmer is unplugged and the blade is not moving.
- Make sure that the switch lock is released or in the OFF position.
- Use a rag to apply a light coat of machine oil along the edges of the top blade.
NOTE: Sometimes during longer uses, your trimmer may need to be lubricated. This will be apparent if the blade becomes sluggish. If this happens, stop the motor, unplug the trimmer, and then apply lubricant.
Keep Your Blades Sharp
Your trimmer’s cutting blades are made from high quality, titanium coated hardened steel. And with normal usage, they’ll stay sharp. However, if the trimmer blade accidentally hits a hard object (wire fencing, stones, glass, nails, etc.), the blade may get nicked or damaged. If this happens or if you notice your trimmer’s performance starts to suffer, take it to an authorized service center for a blade sharpening or service tune-up.
Store Properly
When you’re not using your trimmer, store it indoors. And to help prevent unauthorized use—like children or that one neighbor who borrows everything—keep it locked up, on a top shelf, or just someplace out-of-sight.
When storing:
• Keep the handles dry, clean and free of debris, oil or grease.
• Clean your hedge trimmer after each use. Never douse or spray it with water or any other liquid.
• Never clean it with solvents or strong detergents.
• Always secure your trimmer blade in the scabbard when transporting.
Keeping your hedge trimmer in good shape will not only make yard work easier, it’ll also reduce the chances you’ll have to replace it.
