How to Safely Operate Your Hedge Trimmer
Okay, using an electric hedge trimmer isn’t rocket science. But there are some things to keep in mind to make the job easier, and make it go a lot faster.
Before Trimming Your Hedges
• Wear snug-fitting heavy-duty clothes, gloves, boots, and eye and ear protection.
• Lubricate the hedge trimmer blades. (Do this after you’re done, too.)
• Clear the area of any objects or obstructions for safety.
• Double check that the cord’s connected to a power source.
• Also make sure the cord is securely in the cord hook, and out of the way.
Holding Your Trimmer

• Grasp firmly with front hand on handle, back hand on grip.
• Wrap your fingers around handle, thumb under handlebar.
CAUTION: Thumb and fingers should NEVER be on the same side of the handle.
• Keep hands on handles and behind protective guard, away from blade.
Trimming Basics
• Only trim branches 3/4 inch thick or less (19.05 mm).
• Work slow and steady with a proper grip and stance.
• Trim from bottom to top.
• Let the trimmer do the work. Forcing it can hurt the blade, or you.
• Use a wide sweeping action for new growth, feeding stems directly into blade.
• Use a sawing motion for older growths with thicker stems.
• Stretch a string along the top of the hedge as a guide; then trim just above it.
• Taper the sides of your hedge a little near the top for a more uniformed look.
• Release the trigger as soon as the cut is completed to prevent wear and tear.
Safety Precautions
• Wait for the blade to completely stop before moving to the next hedge.
• Never use your trimmer on a ladder. Very, very dangerous.
• Never run with your trimmer. (This one’s pretty obvious.)
• Don’t trim above shoulder height – this makes it harder to stay in control.
• Don’t overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
• Unplug the power source before making any adjustments to the trimmer.
