Snow Thrower 101
When Old Man Winter comes to town, you’re gonna need a snow thrower to make
it through his visit.
Gas Snow Thrower: Basic Parts
1. Augers Break up the snow and ice.
2. Auger control lever. Starts/stops the augers turning.
3. Drive control lever (If Equipped). Engages/disengages the wheel drive.
4. Shift lever (If Equipped). Changes between speeds.
5. Chute assembly. Throws the snow.
6. Chute directional control. Changes the direction you’re throwing.
7. Skid shoes. Adjusts the height of the auger housing for different surfaces.
8. Shave plate. Allows snow close to the pavement’s surface to be discharged.
9. Chute clean-out tool. Allows you to safely clear a clogged chute.
10. Safety key. Prevents accidental starting. Must be inserted to start the engine.
11. Primer. Gets fuel into the carburetor for easier starting.
12. Choke knob. Closes the carburetor choke plate for easier starting.
13. Throttle. Adjust the engine speed.
14. Electric starter button (If Equipped). Engages the electric starter.
15. Electric starter outlet (If Equipped). Plugs in to allow electric starting.
16. Recoil start handle. Pull here to start the engine.
How to Start Your Gas Snow Thrower
For specific instructions on your snow thrower model, check your engine operator’s manual.
Step 1: To start the snow thrower, firmly insert the safety key.
Step 2: Move the engine speed control to “Fast” and set the choke control to
“Full Choke.”
Step 3: Cover the vent hole with your thumb and press the primer bulb 3 to 5 times.
Step 4: Grab the start handle and pull the rope, slow and steady. Keep pulling until
you feel resistance.
Step 5: Without letting the rope retract all the way, give it one final pull to start
the engine.
Step 6: Move the choke control to “Half Choke.”
Step 7: Once the engine is warmed up, move the choke control to “No Choke.”
You’re now ready to clear snow.
